EORTC Membership Committee (MC)

The Membership Committee (MC) was created and approved by the Board in November 2004. Since then, EORTC membership eligibility is subject to a ‘location criterion’ restricting membership to ‘geographical Europe’ only. More specifically, the geographical scope of participation is limited to centres located in Europe. However, centres from Mediterranean countries (such as Turkey, Israel and Egypt) which have been members of the EORTC before the ‘location criterion’ was introduced may continue to be members of the EORTC. However, institutions located outside ‘geographical Europe’ which are not members of the EORTC are invited to collaborate in so-called ‘EORTC Intergroup studies’. Intergroup studies are decided upon on a case by case basis, according to the capabilities of the potentially collaborating groups, ie. whether these groups contribute sufficiently to the studies by bringing in a large number of centres with a significant number of patients.

Every year, any institution/member reaching the critical minimum of less than 15 patients entered into EORTC clinical trials over the previous 3 years will be officially informed running the risk of their membership being withdrawn in case the activities of the institution/member does not increase during the following year.

New membership to the EORTC has been reorganized in a centralized procedure:
Any new applicant (institution/member) has to submit its membership application to the Membership Committee. In the decision making, the Membership Committee assesses the application in question according to the following criteria:

• track research record of the institution/member
• status of available medical facilities of the institution/member
• availability of qualified personnel for clinical trial management of the institution/member
• potential benefit for other EORTC institution/members from the applying institution/member

Finally, the Board grants membership on the basis of a report issued by the Membership Committee in collaboration with the EORTC Chairmen of the relevant EORTC Groups.
