Dr. André Branquinho joined EORTC Headquarters as the Emmanuel van der Schueren Fellow, a fellowship which offers young scientists in radiation oncology the possibility of being involved in radiotherapy quality assurance (RTQA) for clinical trials. RTQA ensures the consistency of prescription and the delivery of radiotherapy treatment for patients, so that optimal treatment with less expected toxicity can be achieved. RTQA also makes for robust clinical trials results.
Prior to joining the EORTC, Dr. Branquinho was Radiation Oncology Resident in Radiotherapy Department at the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon, Portugal, where he also did his internship. He received his Medical Degree as well as his Masters in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lisbon. His Masters thesis was on the topic, “Mesial Temporal Lobe Sclerosis Epilepsy”. Dr. Branquinho is also a junior tutor for the Fellowship in Anatomic Delineation and Contouring (FALCON) which is an e-learning project from the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO).
At the EORTC, André will work on retrospective evaluation of radiotherapy plans within the context of the EORTC 26053-22054 (CATNON) trial. He will also assist external experts working on prospective RTQA projects such as the EORTC 22113 – 08113 (LungTECH) and the Global Clinical Trials Quality Assurance of Radiation Therapy Harmonisation Group.
The Emmanuel van der Schueren Fellowship has been supported the Kom op tegen Kanker since 2001.
