EORTC Background

Created in 1962, the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is a non-profit international cancer research organisation under Belgian Law.

The EORTC mission is to improve the standard of cancer treatment through the development of new drugs and the testing of drugs already commercially available; and investigating therapies and surgical procedures.

The EORTC aims to facilitate the passage of new drugs and therapies to patient treatment by keeping to a minimum the time lapse between discovery and implementation.

EORTC research is networked through over 300 participating institutions located in 32 countries. More than 2,000 clinicians collaborate on a voluntary basis in 15 disease/treatment oriented groups. Annually, more than 5,000 cancer patients are entered into EORTC multidisciplinary trials. The EORTC is the cooperative cancer clinical research group that retains the largest publication record worldwide.

The EORTC Headquarters is located in Brussels. It coordinates all EORTC activities while dealing with the scientific, legal and administrative issues related to the EORTC's work. The EORTC Headquarters currently comprises +/- 170 staff members representing 17 nationalities.

The activities of the EORTC are peer reviewed by the US National Cancer Institute and the EORTC drugs master file is registered with the US Federal Drugs Agency.
