EORTC – NCI – ASCO Annual Meeting on
“Molecular Markers in Cancer”
15 – 17 November 2007

Highlights, Presentations and Posters

The recent EORTC-NCI-ASCO Annual Meeting on “Molecular Markers in Cancer” held November 15-17, 2007 in Brussels, Belgium was the largest meeting to-date. More than 300 clinicians, pathologists, laboratory scientists and representatives from regulatory agencies and the pharmaceutical industry came together for three days of intense discussion, debate and reflection on the latest biomarker therapeutic discoveries, strategies and clinical applications. A total of 79 research abstracts were featured in the poster discussion sessions with the three most outstanding, all authored by young female researchers, presented during the main meeting sessions.

The EORTC-NCI-ASCO also offered, for a second year now, a tutorial, “From Hypothesis to Product: an EORTC-NCI-ASCO Diagnostics Development Tutorial”, designed to address the critical issues needed when developing new tools to aid in the clinical decision-making process. Over one and a half days, 70 young research clinicians/scientists and industry representatives worked in teams, under the guidance of an expert faculty,  to design simulated development plans for serum and tissue-based tests intended for clinical use to assess prognosis, predict therapeutic response or monitor disease recurrence. The event was not only educationally thought-provoking but also served to foster a mutual appreciation of the expertise represented by all participants and faculty.
