Celebrating Clinical Trials Day 2025 with EORTC’s Young and Early Career Investigators
20 May 2025
Each year on 20 May, the global research community comes together to celebrate Clinical Trials Day, a moment to reflect on the remarkable progress achieved through clinical research and to recognise the scientists and healthcare professionals who continue to drive it forward.
At EORTC, we believe that the future of cancer clinical trials lies in the hands of the next generation of researchers. That is why, this Clinical Trials Day, we are proud to shine a spotlight on our Young and Early Career Investigators (Y-ECIs), a dynamic and growing community of early career professionals committed to advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes across Europe and beyond.
“Clinical Trials Day is not just about acknowledging the trials of the past, it is also about recognising those who, today, are shaping the future of cancer care,” says Dr Denis Lacombe, EORTC CEO. “Our young members are already designing more effective trials, asking bold questions, and learning what it takes to turn research into real-world impact.”
The EORTC Y-ECI community, currently chaired by Dr Petr Szturz and, since June 2024, soon to be succeeded by Dr Jens Lehmann, brings together some of the brightest emerging minds in oncology. These young clinicians, scientists and investigators are fully integrated into the wider EORTC network and supported by experienced mentors. They benefit from tailored training, opportunities to contribute to leading research, and an environment that encourages collaboration and leadership development.
From contributing to protocol development and data analysis to presenting their work on international stages, Y-ECI members are already making a meaningful impact on the future of cancer clinical trials.
As of 2024, 1133 EORTC members are registered as Young and Early Career Investigators, reflecting the size and significance of this community within the organisation.
“The Y-ECI community at EORTC brings people together, fostering a network of researchers who collaborate on various projects and support one another in learning and growing throughout their careers,” says Dr Jens Lehmann.
As we mark Clinical Trials Day, we invite the wider oncology and research community to invest in the future. Whether through mentorship, collaboration, or simply helping to raise awareness, supporting young investigators today means building a stronger and more innovative future for clinical trials and better outcomes for patients tomorrow.
