Postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy significantly improves biochemical progression-free survival and local control

A clinical trial conducted by the EORTC Radiation Oncology and Genito-Urinary Groups and reported in The Lancet suggests that postoperative radiotherapy (P-RT) following radical prostatectomy (RP) significantly improves biochemical progression-free survival (BPFS) and local control. Exploratory analyses also suggest that P-RT might improve clinical progression-free survival (PFS) in patients younger than 70 years of age and in patients with positive surgical margin.

Radiotherapy after surgery has lasting benefits for prostate cancer patients

New research confirms that giving radiotherapy immediately after surgery to remove the prostate has long-term benefits for preventing the biochemical progression* of the disease. After 10 years, 61% of men who received immediate radiotherapy treatment remained disease free compared with 41% who did not, according to the follow-up of the randomised EORTC trial 22911 published Online First in The Lancet.

Are we ready for new models of Academia–Industry Partnerships?

In an article appearing in the European Journal of Cancer, the EORTC’s Denis Lacombe, Susen Burock, and Françoise Meunier discuss the urgent need to develop new models of partnership between academia and industry for early-stage cancer clinical research. Much progress has been made in unraveling the molecular mechanisms and pathways of cancer, and this has inevitably led to the incorporation of translational medicine into the design of clinical trials.

Three chemotherapy regimens shown to be active against extensive disease small cell lung cancer in EORTC trial 08062

Posted on 12 October 2011

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for approximately one fifth of all lung carcinomas, and chemotherapy remains the preferred treatment for patients with this disease. Chemotherapy regimens for SCLC have included many different compounds, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, methotrexate, etoposide, vincristine, cisplatin and carboplatin to name a few, but the standard treatment is a doublet of cisplatin or carboplatin with etoposide.

EORTC Enters Agreement with Imaging Biometrics for Advanced Imaging Trials

IB’S MR Perfusion Software will be used to help assess disease response and progression

Imaging Biometrics, LLC (IB), a provider of advanced visualization and analytical software solutions, has signed an agreement with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) to evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) datasets using its proprietary dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) MRI perfusion software, IB Neuro™.

SPECTAcolor biomarker screening platform offers improved access to clinical trials for patients with colorectal cancer

Extensive screening is required when clinical trials in colorectal cancer (CRC) are conducted. CRCs have different molecular profiles, and it is of interest to be able to design treatments for these molecular subtypes. The SPECTAcolor screening platform for patients with advanced colorectal cancer aims to increase the chance for these patients to access clinical trials with new molecularly defined approaches in the network of the EORTC Gastrointestinal Cancer Group.

Large randomized EORTC trial contributes to the evidence on adjuvant chemotherapy in high risk soft tissue sarcomas

An EORTC Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group / National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group Sarcoma Disease Site Committee clinical trial has made a significant contribution towards understanding adjuvant chemotherapy in treating resected high risk soft tissue sarcomas in an article reported in Lancet Oncology.
