EORTC Melanoma Group investigating use of PEG-IFN- α-2b for patients with stage II ulcerated primary cutaneous melanoma

Survival rates are lower for patients with ulcerated as opposed to non-ulcerated melanomas of a similar tumor category, showing a possible different biological behavior.

EORTC Lung Cancer Group studying potential new indication for pazopanib for patients with non-small cell lung cancer

Approximately half of all non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and the treatment option for these patients is palliative chemotherapy. It has been shown that palliative chemotherapy can lead to improvements in survival and quality-of-life measures, but due to cumulative toxicity, guidelines limit the duration of treatment with currently available agents. The continuation of treatment at the end of a definite number of chemotherapy cycles (maintenance treatment) is an approach that has been widely studied in order to improve outcome in NSCLC.

EORTC academic study shows how whole brain radiotherapy affects health-related quality of life in patients with brain tumors

Therapy for patients with brain tumor metastases often includes removal of the stable solid metastases followed by whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT), but this treatment has been the subject of much discussion. Arguments in favor of WBRT include the desire limit the deleterious effects of disease progression on cognitive functioning, while arguments against using WBRT include the risk of long-term neurotoxicity.

ASCO 2012 report places four EORTC studies among those with greatest potential impact on patients’ lives

Each year the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) publishes a report highlighting the steady progress that is being made in understanding and treating cancer. In this year’s report “Clinical Cancer Advances 2012: ASCO’s Annual Report on Progress Against Cancer”, four EORTC studies were among those selected as having the greatest potential impact on patients’ lives.

EORTC study emphasizes value of patient-reported symptoms

Symptoms reported by patients participating in cancer clinical trials are assessed by their doctors using a standardized scoring system. These scores help the physicians choose the best treatment for the patients and can help predict overall survival.

Bacillus Calmette Guérin in the treatment of patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: what dose and duration of treatment?

Bladder Cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract, the seventh most common cancer in men and the seventeenth most common cancer in women. Approximately 75% of patients present with what is called “non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer” which has a high prevalence due to long-term survival rates of 60% or more at ten years. However approximately 40% of patients will recur within five years and 10% will progress to muscle-invasive bladder cancer with a correspondingly higher risk of cancer specific mortality.
