To mark 25 years of groundbreaking breast cancer research, EORTC and BIG against breast cancer are hosting a special webinar, in collaboration with the EU Health Policy Platform (EUHPP). This event will highlight the significant milestones and advancements in breast cancer research achieved over the past quarter-century while also offering a forward-looking perspective on future innovations and breakthroughs.

BIG and 25 Years of pioneering international breast cancer research: achievements and future directions

By David Cameron, MD, PhD – BIG Chair and professor of Oncology at Edinburgh University, UK. Working at the National Health Service (NHS) Lothian’s cancer centre where he treats breast cancer patients, Prof. Cameron is the joint lead for the Edinburgh Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. He also holds a part-time deputy director role in the Scottish Government-funded Innovative Health Care Delivery Programme (IHDP).

Reflecting on the past and embracing the future: the evolution of liquid biopsies in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

By Michail Ignatiadis, MD, PhD – EORTC Chair and senior physician at the Medical Oncology Department of the Jules Bordet Institute (IJB) and an associate professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles. Leading the Academic Trials Promoting Team, Prof. Ignatiadis has served on the IJB Executive and Research Boards since October 2016, contributing to the institute’s research strategy and promoting high-quality, innovative academic research.

The EU Cancer Mission: collaborative vision, driving research and patient care, raising awareness

By Jan-Willem van de Loo, PhD – who joined the European Commission in 2003. He is a Senior Expert on cancer research and innovation. As the Cancer Theme Lead within the Horizon Europe Cancer Mission he’s responsible for science and stakeholders. In 2021, he led a team co-creating the Mission on Cancer and played a key role in developing Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. Dr. van de Loo holds a degree in biology from Utrecht University, a PhD from Leuven University, and has completed postdoctoral research in cancer.

Incorporating patient perspectives from trial inception: the importance of the patient’s voice

By Tanja Spanic, PhD – President of Europa Donna Slovenia and the European Breast Cancer Coalition. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 26, and now a young mother, Dr. Spanic became an active advocate a year after her diagnosis. She led the young breast cancer patients group of ED Slovenia from 2010 to 2014, served as secretary general of Europa Donna Slovenia in 2014, and became president of it in 2017. She is a veterinarian with a PhD in molecular and behavioral neuroscience and holds various international roles in cancer advocacy and research, including the BIG-PPI (BIG Patient Partnership Initiative).
