Long term results of EORTC trial for patients with resectable liver metastases from colorectal cancer

Long term results of the randomized phase III EORTC intergroup trial 40983 were recently reported in The Lancet Oncology. The observed 4.1% difference in overall survival at five years for patients with initially resectable liver metastases from colorectal cancer was not significant for perioperative chemotherapy with FOLFOX4 (folinic acid, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin) compared with surgery alone.

Prognostic value of health-related quality of life for survival for 11 types of cancer pointed out by EORTC study

Results of an EORTC study published in Cancer point out the prognostic value of baseline recorded health-related quality of life for survival for eleven types of cancer: brain, breast, colorectal, esophageal, head and neck, lung, melanoma, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, and testicular cancer. For each cancer site, at least one health-related quality of life parameter provided additional prognostic information over and above the clinical and sociodemographic variables.

EORTC, BIG and TESARO launch registration trial with niraparib for patients with metastatic BRCA mutated breast cancer

The overall breast cancer death rate has dropped steadily in recent years as meaningful improvements in survival have resulted from the introduction of newer systemic therapies. Even so, it is unlikely that metastatic disease will be cured any time soon. Patients with metastatic disease currently receive systemic therapy consisting of chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and /or biologic therapies as well as supportive care measures. The median overall survival for patients receiving this treatment is approximately two years and ranges from a few months to many years.

EORTC study suggests detection of ERG gene deletion at diagnosis of childhood ALL is useful for risk stratification

Results of EORTC trial 58951 suggest that detecting ERG gene deletion at diagnosis of childhood B-cell precursor (BCP) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) would be useful for risk stratification. The study, published in Leukemia showed that patients with the ERG gene deletion had a very good outcome with an 8-year event-free survival of 86.4% and an overall survival of 95.6%.

Sequential GO and standard chemotherapy provides no benefit for older patients with AML according to EORTC/GIMEMA trial

Results of the randomized, phase III, EORTC/GIMEMA 06012 intergroup trial (AML-17) reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology show that sequential combination of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) and standard chemotherapy provides no benefit for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and is too toxic for patients 70 years of age or more. GO is an antibody-drug conjugate comprised of an anti-CD33 monoclonal antibody linked to a cytotoxic agent.

International collaboration helps EORTC NCIC glioblastoma trial meet accrual target

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the NCIC Clinical Trials Group (NCI CTG) are pleased to announce that the intergroup EORTC 26062-22061 NCIC CTG CE6 trial has met its accrual target of 560 elderly patients with glioblastoma (GBM). An international and intergroup collaboration was essential in meeting this accrual target for this rare cancer and in an elderly population.

Hear EORTC Director Denis Lacombe discuss innovative forms of clinical research

As health care costs are constantly rising and governments are reforming their healthcare systems there is an urgent need to reshape the European clinical research landscape. To bridge the translational gap extensive research to understand the mechanism of the agents and of the disease has to be performed and the real benefit of drugs needs to be assessed independently. Furthermore, meaningful data for reimbursement strategies will be a major goal of future clinical trials as well.

News from the 2013 European Cancer Congress

After an average follow-up of 10.9 years, EORTC researchers found that giving radiation therapy to the lymph nodes located behind the breast and above the collar bone to patients with early breast cancer improves overall survival without increasing side effects.

This new finding ends the uncertainty about whether the beneficial effect of radiation therapy in such patients was simply the result of irradiation of the breast area, or whether it treated cancer cells in the local lymph nodes as well. These results of the EORTC Radiation Oncology and Breast Cancer

Results of long term follow-up show breast conserving treatment with radiotherapy reduces risk of local recurrence

Results of EORTC trial 10853 appearing in the Journal of Clinical Oncology show that breast conserving treatment combined with radiotherapy reduces the risk of local recurrence in women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The incidence of DCIS has been increasing in the past decades, and this has been attributed to increased detection through breast cancer screening using mammograms.
